Plastic Bag Free Village
27 Oct 06
Over the past few months the Koonwarra Sustainable Communities Centre has been working towards the Village becoming plastic bag free. The Centre was successful in the Sustainability Victoria's Plastic Bag Free Challenge and this initiative was launched in conjunction with the opening the the Community Kitchen Garden, the launch of the www.koonwarra.vic.au website and the Graduation of the Green Corps team that worked on the establishment of the Kitchen Garden at the Centre on 23 October 2006.
Sustainability Victoria provided 1200 alternative bags, posters and other display material. These were distributed to the business proprietors and the Koonwarra Hall Committee after the launch.
The Mayor of the South Gippsland Shire Council, Cr Nigel Hutchinson-Brooks, spoke at the function remarking that he had heard about the Challenge and thought it was a good idea and then found that Koonwarra had already taken up the initiative. He praised the Centre and the village for this.
