Congratulations to Stuart & Veronica Greaves

Winners of the Bushcare Award for the South Gippsland Landcare Network.

The judges chose Stuart and Veronica Greaves as winners in this category noting "when the Greaves bought this property, it had a lot of remnant bush, a beautiful creek and tributary, some steep land with erosion problems, a Municipal tip on one boundary and had the usual weed problems. Not all waterways were fenced and the remnant bush was degraded due to grazing in the past. However it did contain some mature Strzelecki, Swamp and Manna Gums. Now the weeds are now under control, waterways fenced off, under-story plants have been added and a large land-slip area has recently been fenced off and planted with a beautiful selection of indigenous plants which are growing really well. We were also impressed with the short and long term plans for the property, and the efforts to involve neighbouring property owners in improvements to their remnants.  This will help to create bush-land corridors in the area. Stuart and Veronica are obviously great advocates within the Community, and have demonstrated involvement with Landcare, Greening Australia, organising Farm Walks and working on the local Tip Management Committee."

Also congratulations to Michael & Clare Landry

who were named in the top Australian milk producers for Quality with low milk cell counts.  They featured in May 13 Weekly Times.

The Nerrena Landcare Group began 2009 with a BBQ at the home of Eric & Sue Miles in Koonwarra on 14 January to enable residents of both Nerrena and Koonwarra and others interested in the group to get to know each other.
Sue is President of the Nerrena Landcare Group.

It was a beautiful evening for the BBQ and the brief meeting that followed. Everyone then walked over the lovely property which includes the Tarwin River where Eric & Sue have embarked on a revegitation of the river bank.

Landcare held a Weed & Landholder Support Day on Saturday, 8 November at the Koonwarra Sustainable Communities Centre and those attending were treated to a wealth of interesting information by enthusiastic and knowledgeable Landcare and Department of Primary Industry people.

It is now over to us to register our support if we consider Landcare can help us to keep our environment weed free and make better use of our land.

The Network held an information night at the Koonwarra Sustainable Communities Centre on Thursday 7th August 2008 to gauge how much interest was out there to form a new Landcare Group for the Koonwarra and Leongatha South residents. It was later decided that residents would join the existing Nerrena Landcare Group.
