Koonwarra participates in Sustainability Festival
17 May 08
The inaugural Gippsland Sustainability Festival was held on the 9th and 10th May at Kernot Hall, Morwell.
The festival included guest speakers, information stalls, school group
activities, demonstrations and an art installation. The festival was a showcase of the range of
technologies, products and groups in Gippsland that can support people to live
more sustainable lifestyles.
The Koonwarra Sustainable Communities Centre and
Koonwarra businesses, The Outside Bit and Susan Neville Preserves were
stallholders the Festival.
Each business was proud to promote their own special and unique business
and also raise the profile of Koonwarra as some people did not know where
Koonwarra is! It was a wonderful
opportunity to raise awareness of the great work in the area of sustainability
that is being undertaken by the Koonwarra community.
KSCC outlined initiatives undertaken by the Centre over the past few years,
handed out information to schools on the Waste Wise Trail and other programs it
can offer to schools, and told people about Freecycle. Freecycle attracted particular attention when
it was explained it was a means to limit items going into landfill and a chance
to give away unwanted goods to other homes where they could still be useful. Read more about Freecycle.
Susan Neville's natural preserves were also popular as visitors were able to sample them.
Tony Hellier from The Outside Bit happily explained many items on display such as the Bokashi Bins and the PumpPod Rainwater Storage and Distribution Device. Tony also lectured the gathering with a PowerPoint presentation from the main stage.
