Rural Surrounds

 Hay bales

The fertile rolling hills surrounding Koonwarra are prime dairy country with South Gippsland supplying 20% of Australia's milk production from 700 dairy farms.  Milk tankers are a familiar site on the roads.  Market gardens are another prominent rural activity with crops such as snow peas growing in abundance.  There are also several wineries only minutes from Koonwarra offering superb cool climate wine tastings.

Rolling hills

There are many attractions throughout the rural areas close by to Koonwarra that are well worth a visit.  The most well known of these, of course, is the Tarra Bulga National Park with its magnificent rainforest, tree ferns, the Tarra Falls, the Bulga suspension bridge and beautiful walks.  You are even likely to experience the call of a lyrebird.

Agnes Falls

Agnes Falls is also worth a visit being Victoria's highest span waterfall (59 metres).  This can be spectacular, especially after rains.  A trip to the Agnes Falls can also take in the Toora Wind Farm.

The forests of Mount Worth State Park are also interesting and can be combined with a trip down the Grand Ridge Road with travellers experiencing panoramic views, forests and steep fern gullies.

The Great Southern Rail Trail is a delight for locals and tourists alike.  Apart from a small section between Koonwarra and Meeniyan it is now possible to walk, cycle or horseride from Leongatha to Foster, a trip of  37 kms.  The sights range from views of The Prom to areas of trees and  open farmlands.
